The students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, have once again proven their innovative capabilities, as two teams from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering recently emerged among the top winners at the Africa-wide IEEE IAS-IPCSD Engineering Design Contest 2024. The students collectively walked away with a prize of $4000 for their groundbreaking engineering projects, reaffirming the institution’s dedication to fostering innovation and technical excellence.

A Milestone Achievement for UNIZIK’s Engineering Department

The competition saw the participation of ten UNIZIK students, divided into two distinct teams: Team Incredibles and Team Titans. Both teams demonstrated not only technical expertise but also a keen understanding of practical problem-solving for real-world applications.

Team Incredibles, comprising Egwuchika Tochukwu, Ogbuagu Chibueze, Samuel Gospel, and Uzuke Victory, presented a prototype for an emergency/crisis management system on public roads. Their design focuses on improving response times during emergencies and streamlining communication between authorities and the public. In a continent where road safety is a critical concern, their solution aims to revolutionize how crises are managed on busy roads, potentially saving countless lives.

On the other hand, Team Titans, made up of Agbo Augustine, Onyebuchi Goodnews, Lekia Peace, Chidiebere Dominion, Udemgba Ferdinand, and Gabriel Onyedika Nnamoko, developed an innovative waste-to-energy system aimed at intelligent and sustainable waste management. This system seeks to tackle two pressing issues in African cities—waste disposal and energy shortages—by converting waste into a renewable source of energy. Their project holds significant promise for urban sustainability, particularly in densely populated regions.

The Projects: Solving Africa’s Pressing Challenges

1. Emergency/Crisis Management System on Public Roads

Team Incredibles’ project addresses one of the most prevalent issues in public safety: emergency management. The system they developed incorporates real-time traffic monitoring, automated alerts, and rapid response coordination. Designed to minimize delays in emergency response, the system improves communication between motorists, pedestrians, and authorities, ensuring timely action during crises such as accidents, road blockages, or natural disasters.

Key Features:

  • Real-time Monitoring: Sensors and cameras integrated along public roads to track traffic flow and detect accidents or road obstructions.
  • Automated Alerts: Instant notifications sent to nearby authorities and motorists to guide them through safe routes during emergencies.
  • Centralized Response Coordination: Synchronization between emergency services, law enforcement, and rescue teams for streamlined crisis management.

2. Waste-to-Energy System for Sustainable Waste Management

Team Titans’ waste-to-energy system represents a forward-thinking approach to urban waste management. In many African cities, waste disposal is a growing problem that strains municipal resources. By converting waste into energy, the team not only addresses the waste issue but also provides a renewable source of energy for local communities.

Key Features:

  • Energy Recovery from Waste: Combustion of organic waste to produce heat, which is then used to generate electricity.
  • Sustainable Infrastructure: Integration of waste collection systems with energy conversion plants to reduce landfill usage and lower carbon emissions.
  • Scalability: The system can be implemented in both small communities and large cities, making it adaptable to various urban contexts.

IEEE Africa-wide IAS-IPCSD Engineering Design Contest 2024: A Platform for Innovation

The IEEE IAS-IPCSD Engineering Design Contest is an internationally renowned competition that brings together the brightest engineering minds from universities across Africa. The 2024 edition of the contest was particularly competitive, with hundreds of entries from top universities across the continent. The event aims to showcase innovative engineering solutions to contemporary problems, and UNIZIK’s teams stood out for their practical and impactful designs.

Both Team Incredibles and Team Titans secured top positions in the competition, which awarded a total prize fund of $6000, with $4000 going to the two UNIZIK teams. The judging criteria emphasized innovation, feasibility, and potential real-world impact, all of which were embodied in the UNIZIK projects.
