The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has recently announced the suspension of all final-year students from the Departments of Environmental Protection and Management, Microbiology, and Mass Communication. This decision follows a series of incidents involving the students, who disregarded the university’s directives by engaging in reckless driving, unauthorized display of departmental colors, and excessive celebrations after their examinations.
According to a circular with reference number UC/REG/DISC 45, on August 7, 2024, the students’ actions were deemed a serious breach of the university’s regulations. The notice of suspension was issued by the Institution’s Registrar, Mr. Gabriel O. Egbe, and highlighted the deep disappointment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, regarding the students’ behavior, which she stated tarnishes the reputation of the institution and its students.
The suspension affects several critical aspects of the students’ academic progression. As part of the disciplinary measures, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, has been instructed to halt all processes related to the finalization and release of the affected students’ academic results. This move underscores the seriousness with which the university views these violations.
The matter has been escalated to a Special Management Committee tasked with conducting a thorough investigation and providing recommendations for further actions. In the meantime, the Deans of the affected faculties are required to ensure strict adherence to the management’s directive.
This suspension serves as a warning to all students regarding the importance of adhering to university rules and maintaining decorum at all times. The university is committed to upholding its values and expects its students to reflect these standards both on and off campus.
