OPay Digital Services Limited has launched a ₦60 million scholarship initiative for students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), aimed at reducing financial burdens and encouraging academic excellence.
The programme was officially introduced on Tuesday through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OPay and the university, represented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Haruna Musa. The effort was facilitated by the Students’ Union Government (SUG), led by Abdullahi Usman Baba, in partnership with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
In his remarks, Professor Musa praised OPay for choosing BUK as one of the beneficiaries. “This scholarship will greatly boost our students’ morale. I urge recipients to make the best use of this opportunity, and I encourage OPay to sustain this remarkable initiative,” he said.
According to OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Mr. Itoro Udo, the programme is part of the company’s wider commitment to youth empowerment through education. He explained that BUK is among 20 Nigerian universities included in the 10-year scheme. Each year, 20 students from the institution will receive ₦300,000 each.
With over 16 million active users across Nigeria, OPay is expanding its role beyond financial services, contributing to both financial inclusion and educational development.
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, described the scholarship as “timely and highly impactful,” noting that many students encounter serious financial challenges while pursuing higher education.
Over the next decade, the ₦60 million programme is expected to provide consistent support to BUK students and could serve as a model for increased private-sector investment in Nigerian higher education.
